FAQ

Are my project files uploaded to a server?
No. The version byte is patched entirely in your browser. Your project never leaves your device.
What does downgrading actually change?
Only the major-version byte in the head chunk of the binary RIFX file. Every other byte of your project is preserved. After Effects then attempts to open the project in the older version.
Which target version should I pick?
Pick the version matching your older After Effects. CC 2018 and CC 2019 targets are experimental — complex projects may fail to open. To calibrate, save an empty project in your older After Effects, inspect it here, and use that number.
Will everything in my project survive?
Not necessarily. Effects, expressions, or features that do not exist in the older After Effects will be dropped or broken on open. Open the result, check it, and save as a new file. Always keep your original.
Is there a file size limit?
Yes: 100 MB per .aep file. Most project files are far smaller than this.
